Leoni Werle, a renowned designer, has created a unique and versatile lamp design called PILU. Inspired by the movement of a seesaw found on children's playgrounds, PILU aims to provide adjustability while maintaining a low-tech approach. This innovative lamp design offers a refreshing take on lighting solutions.
The key feature of PILU lies in its base, which resembles a seesaw. This shape allows the lamp to switch between two different positions, providing flexibility in lighting angles. The lamp shade and the base are connected by a one-directional joint, which moves according to the angle of the base. This joint enables the light to be directed downwards even when the lamp is in the angled position.
When standing straight, PILU functions as a regular standing lamp, with its light shining down the bar and serving as an indirect light source. However, when angled, it transforms into a reading light, perfect for placement next to a sofa or on a desk. This adaptability makes PILU a versatile and practical lighting solution for various settings.
The realization of PILU involves the use of high-quality materials. The lampshade is made of spun aluminum, which is powder-coated for a sleek and durable finish. The base, on the other hand, is crafted from solid oak, adding a touch of natural elegance to the design.
PILU comes in two sizes to cater to different needs. The standing lamp measures 500 mm x 250 mm x 1650 mm, while the table lamp version is more compact, measuring 200 mm x 100 mm x 700 mm. This range of sizes ensures that PILU can fit seamlessly into various spaces, from living rooms to offices.
The PILU project began in December 2011 and was exhibited during IMM Cologne at the D3 Contest. This design has garnered recognition and acclaim, including the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2013. This accolade highlights the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of PILU, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. By improving the quality of life and offering a unique lighting experience, PILU contributes to making the world a better place.
Leoni Werle's PILU lamp is a testament to the power of simplicity and adaptability in design. With its innovative features and elegant aesthetics, PILU is set to revolutionize the way we illuminate our spaces.
